Shard update 28 September 2013


Tonight’s update is a rather important one… you will notice there will be no server wars tonight because we’re making some adjustments to the server itself.  In addition the following changes are going into place tonight:

  • T2A will officially be closed, this means no recall, gate, teleporting or use of keywords to get into or out of T2A
  • With T2A closing, you will also notice the number of dueling arenas has shrunk considerably
  • With T2A closing, Delucia has been removed from the public moongates, in it’s place Serpents Hold has been added
  • If you log into a player who’s in T2A you will be moved to Britain immediately, you will also be given a message to let you know T2A was closed and you’ve been moved.
  • Spawns which were limited to T2A have been placed in the overworld, you will need to find them, we will not be sharing the locations
  • A new player command has been added to to the game [website which will take you to our website to get the latest and greatest information

This round of changes is setting the stage for a much larger change to our faction system… you will see in the coming week that faction changes will be announced or made public on a test center server.  These changes will re-invigorate the faction system, bringing fun back to them.

We have a whole slew of changes in the works but it’s important to remember that we are turning an aircraft carrier here, it takes time and a methodical approach.  You will see more and more changes over time but we’re not going to make 50 changes at once.  T2A was our big “change” for this update… we hope you enjoy it.

As with any changes, there could be negative impact to the shard… in the event we discover a negative impact we will address it.  Thank you for all of your support of UOGamers!

    I am sad to see the second age being closed. I do believe this to be a negative thing for the server, and am surprised nobody else isn’t speaking up about it.

      There are people expressing lack of support for the closure, but not all in one place. I guess I would like to know more about why the decision was made. If the Del pond was such a problem, then I don’t see why it couldn’t have easily been removed, as well as the Delucia option on the moongate gump. There was something said about the consolidation of the user base, but I don’t really see that holding much weight. People will congregate together and take part in PVP regardless of whether or not T2A exists.

    The problem being t2a was that there isn’t as many players as there once was, so making the world smaller for more interaction between the player or so I would assume. Most the time del pond just had people afk.. Maybe in the future hybrid picks up it’s player base and enough people want it back maybe they enable it. As for now though I think this is a good change for the time being, especially since they are adding t2a spawns in areas outside of t2a.

    I’ve played UO off and on since 1999. I have seen it all, and have opinions on just about everything. Despite the fact that the player base may be dwindling, removing the Second Age was a horrible idea, and should have been polled by the players before being implemented.

    I am willing to bet that Hybrid will lose a large portion of their remaining player base over this move, and once Ryan realizes that this was a huge mistake, it will be re-implemented. The question is, will it be too late to bring back the people who have left?

    Hybrid is very close to the glory days of UO with many of the modern improvements implemented into it, without allowing all of the crap that ruined the game, like Powerscrolls, Trammel, elves, etc…Removing lands is a big mistake though…one of the great things about Hybrid is that they took t2a, and actually made it more fun than the OSI original, by adding monster spawns and interesting changes all over the map. Its one of the main reasons why I decided to stay here and play as opposed to many of the other free shard alternatives.

    I also would like to point out that its quite obvious that Hybrid caters to the PvP types, and while I personally have no problem with that, I feel it is important to make all of the other play styles feel like Hybrid is their home as well. There aren’t many newbie players on this server, and probably never will be. Most of the people that play UO these days, are from the glory days of UO. Most of the other newbies/easy targets still play on Trammel servers. The very few players that Hybrid does have, are probably not into things like PvP yet, and they are not going to be happy about losing a huge portion of their world overnight.

    This type of player has fun learning new skills, hunting and gathering materials like wool, food, etc…they like to explore the lands and dungeons. Keeping things interesting to this type of player who likes to character build and likes to spend decorating their homes with rare items will serve to bring fresh new blood to the server. The PvP types will always be around on Free Servers, as they hate trammel. Making things fun for new players will provide more easy marks for the PvP, pk, thieving crowd.

    Having Daily, weekly, and monthly rares available was a great thing for UO. Things like rocks, fruit baskets, rainbow cloth, etc…These things would be a good way to arouse interest in the player base, and it would give players more items to decorate their homes with.

      I appreciate the feedback but we’re working on providing all of these things to make the shard better for everyone. We’re setting up areas where you’ll be able to do all of these things in Britannia without the T2A expansion. How about we all give it some time instead of having instantly negative reactions… I know change isn’t easy but sometimes it’s necessary.

      Ray, I agree with you. The wonder of exploring a vast new land and collecting the serber spawn rares brouhht an exciting element to the game. Removing this or not catering to the possibility that a percentage of players still play for this reason risks the alienation of that percentage. It should have been voted on and decided by the players.

    i do believe the majority of players were for the removal of t2a tbh. while their was no public poll im sure ryan and staff did some form of internal polling. i cant see any changes ever being made unless there was a big enough demand for them. as far as i can tell from everyone on twitter and people in game ive only met 2 or 3 people against it, but dozens for it. don’t get me wrong, i will miss t2a too, especially the town of papua, but hey server numbers are up. 2 weeks ago we barely were hitting 400 during peak, last few days SINCE change we have been hovering just under 450. and i don’t know about anyone else but it sure is nice to see people in brit graveyard again 🙂

    What if you just removed the ability to Recall/Gate into or out of T2A? I’ve played on other servers like this, and it basically kept most of the player base in Britania, without actually removing the lands. I personally think that this would be a better alternative than removing T2A altogether.

    A few suggestions to improve Hybrid in my opinion:
    1. Introduce Paragons
    2. Limit player accounts per i.p.address – This would free up a ton of space for housing
    3. Inflate prices for Customized Housing, but keep old school style deeds affordable. – This would bring clear up the eye-soar of empty plots everywhere, while bringing back some more old school homes.
    4. Introduce Slayer Weapons
    5. Introduce Daily, Weekly, Monthly, Yearly Server Rares
    6. Limit Veteran Rewards – There is no need for the massive amount that is currently allowed on the server.
    7. Poll active players before implementing any big changes!!!

    After reading the aforementioned opinions, I’ve decided to opine on the matter. I see it as being beneficial to remove T2A for a better UO experience. This is primarily due to the fact that now that the player base will no longer be as spread out, having a just the original UO map will allow for pvper’s to engage in pvp more frequently. Furthermore, the only reason I ever got addicted to UO was for the pvp, but because of all the trammy garbage that was occurring I stopped playing altogether. Perhaps the dev’s are taking into consideration those players that choose to spend their time owning someones face for once.

    I had to post something for the first time ever. I will not play Hybrid as long as T2A is gone. I can see some reasons you feel the shard may be better without it, but this is a LOT of content I enjoyed that I now cannot. Please add it back, or this will be the last time I ever will play on the shard.
